can they report "late payment to credit bureau after the account being settled?

I have a XXX charge card, i did not pay my balance in full about two years ago, then i moved to another place and totall unaware of this 50$ balance. now i find out in my credit report that they sent this debt to its collection department on March, 2009 and they continue report "late payment" each month to credit bureau until today! so are they allowed to do so after my account was settled? am i double hit?
