I lost my job without any notice, I applied for unemployment and 1 week of unemployment was 1 day of work, So I am 55 and jobs in my field are few, Unemployment with pay rent and util, but thats about it, Should i just file bankrupt or just deal with phone calls and see if I can ever catch up? What should I say to creditors to put off payments if possible
I have about 50k of debt

How much of that debt is unsecured? Like credit cards. I am over 55 and collected unemployment for a long time. I can give you some tips. Find 1099 jobs on Craigslist that will pay you commissions to work from home. Do not tell unemployment. If they think that you are working even if you have not made a dime yet, they will say you are not actively seeking work and penalize you. Take a week off but thats it. Do not get comfortable. Looking for work is a job. Look as if there were no UC Checks. I just landed a job as a senior sales executive for a renewable energy company but it is straight commission. One commission would pay a years worth of unemployment and I write part time articles for a business that is doing SEO for their site. I found both these jobs on Craigslist. Take advantage of any training that the Gov will pay for. At your age you may have to be retrained depending upon the business you were in. Even if you don't, adding a skill to your resume helps. It shows that you are active in learning and not an older worker behind on whats new. I got my Heath and Life insurance license to have a second stream of income. It not only was paid for but I received a gift card just for completing the course and another for passing the test.
Creditors will very often hold off if you call them and explain your circumstances but not all of them. What state do you live in? If you are asked by a creditor to fill out a financial statement make sure you come across as destitute. Also remember that you get Fed taxed on unemployment. That really sucks at the beginning of next year. PM me and I will give you my email address. I do not usually give personal help but I am probably the only one on this site your age that has been down your road. Also take "objective" off your resume. No one uses that anymore. Try "summary of qualifications" instead. The only thing I ask is that you join the forum as a member so I know who you are when you email me.
