Settle Default College Loan/Avoid Wage Garnishment of Spouse

Before I was married I was consistently paying my monthly bills: major credit card, 2 department cards, and a student loan payment. I fell ill and stopped working due to numerous hospital admissions and surgeries. Now I have $35k in debt (including school loans and all in default).I'm still not working and now have a husband and daughter. We live paycheck to paycheck. I don't want to file bankruptcy and would rather negotiate/settle on my outstanding balances. Can I negotiate a defaulted college loan? If I have to file bankruptcy, can I file personal in order to avoid harming my husband's credit or risk his wages being garnished?
