Within 12 hours I got a reply from the BBB which said basically that because of the nature of my complaint about debts and judgments etc. they do not "do" investigations on those kinds of complaints and so they were closing my complaint file.
So I wrote back that in my opinion their ratings are somewhat deceiving by nature of the fact that the public who is not aware of their policy may put more trust in a company than is warranted.
I said I thought they should make it clear that they don't get into debt/judgment disputes etc. Unless people know what the ratings are based on or not based on then they can't make informed decisions.
I never got a reply.
So beware that the Better Business Bureau may not be considering all the facts about the companies they rate. Therefore YOU need to be the final authority on whom you wish to trust. ;)

The BBB is a member supported, letter writing entity. It has never been their job to get involved, only report what is reported to them. They only pass information along.

Thank you Soap Lady for a perfect example of why their ratings can be meaningless. If they only report what is reported to them and then, as in my case, they say we don't report on credit matters or debt matters or judgment matters then they have no information to report. So their rating is not going to reflect any complaints they get about credit or debt or judgments. The complaints people are going to be making will logically almost always be about whatever it is the company does. And the Better Business Bureau does not get involved in the things that deal with credit so to consult them for a rating on a debt-credit-judgment company isn't going to be worth the paper its printed on.
This is a direct quote from the Better Business Bureau in response to my complaint About Midland:
"Your complaint is not under the purview of the BBB, and has been closed"
For all I know they may have gotten 10,000 complaints reporting/complaining about the same thing as did I. But since they close the reports without action, basically they have no information to rate such a company on.
SO, my point is that people are mistaken about what their rating represents. They do not get involved in debt collections or judgments and as such their ratings can be misunderstood.
By way of explanation lets assume we are talking about a company called Green Frog Statue Manufacturing Company.
The company is in the business of making green frog statues and Better Business Bureau days that they don't address anything (complaints, conflict resolution, etc) regarding green frog statues. If someone sends them a complaint and says "I got a defective green frog statue from this company" that complaint will not be reflected in whatever rating the Green Frog Statue Manufacturing Company gets from BBB. It stands to reason if the only thing you do is make Green Frog Statues and the BBB doesn't rate anything dealing with Green Frog Statues the rating they have will be misleading because the BBB may have gotten 10,000 complaints about their green frog statues but not one of those complaints goes anywhere. So their A rating would not be an A rating if the BBB applied all the complaints about green frog statues. If the BBB is going to exclude a category of complaints that covers most of what a company does then it is not an accurate representation of how happy people are with the company or how well they deal with complaints.

I don't KNOW, obviously, but I suspect that is why these sneaky collectors and junk debt buyers are signed up with the BBB. Because they know that nothing they do will get rated by the BBB so they have almost a guaranteed glowing report.
