Basically I got 2 credit cards when I went to college, $200 limit, used them and never made any payments due to not having a job. Then when I was in a place to make payments the amounts were outrages, in the $1000.00, and they would not work with me. Also, I did not pay on my student loan & the government keep my income tax return one year.

Any advice on how to improve my credit report would be greatly appreciated! I have not received any collection calls in years. I don't want to stirrup something and cause more of a mess. I am willing to pay the amounts, but I want the information off my report and not to start over for another 7 years! I really just want my report clear as soon as possible & looking for the best/fastest way to do that! I have read about letters, but don't know if I should do that since my amounts are so low.

It's good that you want to clear your credit report. You should contact your creditors/collection agencies and tell them that you want to pay off the debts. However, it is important to note that negative items remain on your credit report for around 7 years. So, you should negotiate with your original creditors to remove the negative listings from your credit report.

For the accounts that has been sold to collection agencies, you can negotiate with the CAs to report them as Settled but the original creditors will not remove it. Since they have sold the account, they are under no obligation to strike them off.

You can try to negotiate a removal of the bad marks, but know that it will be a long and arduous process. If you do not have the time to dedicate to this and your husband has outstanding credit, then see if he can apply for the loan by himself and ensure he places you on the title, but not the loan. Later, if he sees this as an issue and after your credit has cleared up you maybe able to refinance the loan in both your name. Note however, he is the one assuming all of the risk in this situation.

If it was me, I would just let it drop off. It sounds like it will in the next few months. Perhaps send the creditors payments in the amount that you charged, since you did use their money... that would be honorable.

Hi, I'm new here and not an expert. But if it were me, I would check my credit report to see what it says. The report should say if the accounts were closed by the creditor. If they were, then leave it alone. If they are still "open", then you might want to call. That is a tough situation to be in.
