Is it possible to change your ssIs it possible to change your ss#? I had payday loans - they are paid but back in 2001 someone stole my identity, nothing came out of it but now it seems after I did this stupid payday loan junk someone is applying for a car loan, a motorcycle loan in my name. Will they change my ss#, I have police reports from 2001 and yesterday but the cop said the only way to make it stop is to get a new ss#

Yes, the Social Security Administration will change your number. You need to show proof that you've suffered harm from someone misusing your ss# and/or you've made all reasonable efforts to otherwise solve the problem i.e. credit report freezes, closing accounts and changing account numbers, etc. If both of these apply, then you can simply visit your local SSA office, call, or visit www.ssa.gov/reach.htm.

OK, let me correct myself. You can, but it's a difficult process. Have you done everything to correct the situation? One simple fix is to notify all credit bureaus of the situation. They can put a block on your account and, anytime someone applies for credit in your name, they will not authorize anything until they've verified with you that it's legit.

Changing your SS# will mean that you start over with your credit profile with the bureaus.

Of course, this isn't guaranteed either. Sometimes the bureaus will create a subfile for your new SS# and attach some of the old accounts from your previous SS#.

Remember, changing your SS# should be the ABSOLUTE LAST resort to dealing with ID theft.

I have put the freeze on there before see this has been going on for 10 yrs now. I have filed another police report yesterday and filed a complaint with the FTC and put the freeze on again but I am sick of this in a nut shell - I just want it to end, I mean c'mon they tried to buy a friggin car - that's a little extreme don't you think? And the cop nailed it right on the head when he said they will wait for 6-7 yrs then resurface again. so YES I am ready for the change, but what happens when I file my taxes?

get it over with cause you will get more and more angry. It is not our fault. The faster you take care of it the faster it will be over with. Plus the better you will feel. Do not just report it to the cops report it to everyone from local to federal.

Tomorrow i would walk into the nearest ssi office and ask them to change the number plus give them evidence that you have been used by someone you do not even know.

Be very careful who you do business with in person or online as you never know who might be on the other end.
