I just recieved notice from this Asset Acceptance that they are seeking to collect a debt against a closed account that is over 20years old. How do I rid myself of them

You still owe the debt...they are not doing anything illegal trying to collect it. However it is time barred and they can no longer sue you on it. You need to send them an FOAD letter....F*&K Off and Die! Simply write to them telling them that the debt is time barred and to never contact you again by any manner and to pound sand.

Thats my point I don't owe the debt at all, this was a gov't credit card which was turned in without debt and the account was closed, which I then removed from my credit reports. I understand that I can tell them that this account is over 20yrs old and outside SOL, my bigger concern is where do they come up with a debt owed against a closed account, and how do I protect myself from this crap again? Thank you for you assistance!

I wouldn't ignore the letter. Do as SL suggests and tell them too bad so sad.

IF for any reason (best to cover your bases) by some strange circumstance they should claim they contacted you and you didn't respond you would have the letter showing your response that they are out of luck.

An ounce of prevention out of court is money well spent. Plus, wouldn't it be satisfying to in essence let them know you are no dummy and they need to peddle their stuff somewhere else?
