the creditor threatened us with a lawsuit. do we have to find a lawyer? will i be able to negotiate debt settlement myself? how do I go about this?

Hi!
Welcome to the forums!
Do you really owe the debt? Find out that first. If you are not sure about it, then ask him to validate the debt. If he can prove that you really owe the debt, then you can negotiate with him to settle the debt. It is always better to settle the debt yourself. This is because, the settlement companies charge fees for their services. You can save that money. You can get useful information on do it yourself debt settlement from the following page:

You will be able to settle the debt yourself. You should give a call to your creditor and explain your financial hardship to him. Depending upon your present financial situation, let him know how much money you'll be able to pay. You'll have to negotiate with the creditor politely so that he agrees to accept your offer and it becomes affordable for you to pay off the dues. With time, if you have some extra money, you can pay it to the creditor in order to get rid of the debt faster.
