This lady called me approximately 6 weeks ago saying I owed 1300.00. Due to an old credit card. I used to have credit cards but not anymore now they are threating to file charges with the district atttorney and have me serves with papers to garnish wages. Lady also told me she woukld send me aout paperwork explianing debt. I have never recieved any paperwork in the mail and I just got off the phone with a different woman claiing I need to contact them within 24 hours or the DA will be called. What di i do?

Collectors are required to send you a letter within 5 days from contact telling you that they are handling your account. In the letter they send you, they have to say that you have 30 days after receipt of the letter to dispute the validity of the debt. You need to then write debt validation letter to them and send via certified/return receipt mail. A sample of a debt validation letter is on this forum (just search for it). Until they can validate the debt, then you do not have to talk to them.

The fact that she said the DA would call you indicates they are full of BS...debts are civil, not criminal.
