I was wondering if SSM Group is legal to lend in South Carolina? I have been receiving threatening phone calls to my job from Gateway Recovery on SSM Group's behalf. The man that I spoke with offered me a settlement amount and wanted me to give him my debit card info over the phone. I asked him to email me the details of the defaulted account and that I would call him back to set up payments. I never received the email, so I never called him back. Just wondering how I should try to handle this situation, and wondering if this SSM Group could also be the ones behind the threatening calls I had been getting from men with middle-eastern accents. ????? Thanks for any help :)

Hi!
Welcome to the forums!
This company sounds fishy. Don't make any payments to them until they validate the debt. Another thing, by federal law, they can't call you at your workplace more than once. They are also not allowed to threat you when making collection calls. Clearly, they have broken at least 2 laws. So, you have the right to file complaint against them. Don't give your personal details to them. They can misuse that information at any time. As far as the threatening calls you are receiving from men with middle-east accents, you should record the conversation in a tape. Tell them that you know your consumer rights and will take legal action against them should they disturb you again. You can use that tape as proof in the court should you file a case against them.

well for one thing SSM group is not legal anywhere as they are not based in the US.second anyone collecting for them is more than likely not legit.i wouldn't call them back, but when they call you back demand something in writing before you proceed.if like i think they will react to that get nasty hang up on him and do not speak further to him.btw no pdl is legal in SC regardless so do not a bottomfeeder buffalo you.

And those middle eastern accent calls? Ignore those completely. Under no circumstances are they legally doing anything. They are not coming to arrest you. Not coming to sue you. Not calling from any official office of anyone at all. Just a scam perpetrated either by some foreign jerk face that bought info from one of these illegal lenders, or hacked it from some pay day loan company/referral service. That's how they "know" so much about you and your accounts. They can't do anything, and won't. When people talk about bottomfeeders around here...the India scam calls are BELOW bottomfeeder.

FYI, there is an email address for this collection agency, if I were you, I would shoot them an email and tell them they are attempting to collect on an illegal debt, I would also inform them that you are going to file a complaint against them with the N.Y. attorney general for violating the FDCPA.

What They Are diong to you(Threatening collection calls to work) is ILLEGAL under the federal fair credit protection act. A complaint needs to be made to the FTC. You can also get a copy of this law from the FTC website.

No they aren't licensed in TN, and as you know TN requires collection agencies to be licensed by the state.
