Hi!
Welcome to the forums!
This is one of the scare tactics of the scammers and companies to make money out of the innocent consumers. If they contact you again. ask them to validate the debt. Send them a debt validation letter via certified mail. If they can't validate the debt, then send a cease and desist letter to them. If the company contacts your nephew again, then he should inform the company representative about taking legal action against them. It is illegal to make repeated calls to a family member, relative, friend, etc. regarding a consumer's debt.
If they are able to validate the debt, then you have to make payments to them. Check whether or not the payday loans and that company is legal in your state. If they are not legal, then you'll only have to pay the principal amount. If they are legal, then you can work out an alternative repayment with the company.

I am getting calls from some company that said I owe two loans to a on line company, $10 loan. I asked for a phone number to call and verify and I was told that would be available when I was served my paperwork. I have gone on line with no help, and, the bank that they said this check was issued from is closed.
Can I go to jail, loose my job? :(
Reading these comments I am not alone

Sub. #3, do you have or have you ever had a PDL? These companies unfortunately share your personal info with each other. I could be mistaken, but I think that this would be a civil matter, not criminal, and you're not going to jail. These low-life companies use all kinds of semi-legal jargon and threats to get money. Just curious, did the person say that you would be served in such-and-such a time, and did he/she have a heavy accent? If they call again, don't admit to owing anything over the phone but tell them they must send you something in writing about this debt you supposedly owe.

No, not an accent at all, but very nasty. I admit I did have a couple of PDL, but, these were taken care of. When I ask for some type of proof that is when they get nastier, and start telling me that I will get my papers served 24 to 48 hours and that will be the proof. I feel like I am going in circles, and, I am concerned if they come to my place of employment I will be fired.

Well, the illegal lenders will never come to your place of employment. They might make harassing calls to your work place, but they won't come there at all. Just hang up, you won't get anywhere. Tell them to send a Dunning letter (which if they haven't within 5 days of original contact, they are already in 1) and hang up. If and when they send a Dunning (which they will never btw), you can respond with a debt validation letter. But do not worry about being arrested or anything, that will not happen. And they won't serve you papers. Indeed if they stepped into a court of law, they would have FAR more problems to deal with than trying to get you to pay this mythical debt that doesn't exist. All they will do is harass, harass, and harass some more. Hang up on them.

I asked for some type of proof and that is when they got nasty and called me a deadbeat and I was just using stall tatics. They called me at work a couple of times this week, the last call was to let me me know that I was going to be served 24 to 48 hours and that was Wednesday. How can I get rid of this?
The other issue I have is I had my home phone number changed, it is unlisted. Somehow these people have managed to get this number the same day that I got it changed! When I called my old number a recording comes on saying that it was either disconnected or changed, when you call directory assistance, they will not give out the new number becasue of it being unlisted. How did they get this?

You can't quite just rid them from your life. You need to just keep hanging up or turning down your ringer and ignoring them. They eventually get the idea and stop bothering. Whatever you do, do NOT admit to owing a debt over the phone ever in your life and don't try to have a conversation or reason with these idiots. It's like trying to argue with a dining room table...there is no way you can gain anything. Remember everything they see is false threats and if they are indeed a legal lender, you need to work something out with them. But do NOT work with scum or illegal lenders. And tell them to communicate only by writing via postal mail too just before you hang up if you want. If they keep calling you a) have a pretty good idea they are illegal lenders/collectors and b) have them on violations of the FDCPA. As far as how they got your number, god only knows. I wouldn't put these people behind pretending to be you (aka stealing your identity) to your phone company. Not saying that's how, but they go low as you already know.
