DID i GET SCAMMED?

soo this place send me a letter in june saying i owe al this money and they are taking me to COurt but i end up paying them over the phone ad i asked for a Paid in full payment recpit and i yet til this day havent got it i call back the number listed in the letter sent me and nwo its disconnected theres no way i find out i call us bank and they said they never got anything saying i paid for it soo how am i supposed to find out now?? if i paid the right person or if its a freakin scam???

I personally feel that you did not do the right thing by paying the collection agency over the phone. Rather you should have asked them to validate the debt. If they would have been unable to validate the debt, you won't have to pay them even a penny. Now that their number is disconnected, it will be difficult for you to trace them. There are high chances that it will turn out to be a scam. I will suggest you to contact an attorney and take his suggestions in this matter. He will let you know whether or not you can take any legal steps against them or trace them.

I think you have become a victim of scam. This is one of the scare tactics that the scammers use to make money. Verbal agreements are not legal binding. It will be difficult for you to prove in the court. I don't think you can do much now. You ought to have been more careful. However, you can report your case to the National Fraud Information Center.
