I got a call from "The Department of Crime Prevention" today, telling me that they were going to send a cop to pick me up and arrest me. When I asked for the phone number of their company they gave me 661-347-6528. They would not give me their address or what ammount I "owe". I cannot find anything about them online. Doe's anyone have any info on them? I contacted my states Attorney General's Office and they Santa Clarita Police Department (because that is where the number is from) and am thinking about calling my local PD. What would you do??

I agree with the other posters; report them and do not admit to owing anything over the phone. If they call again tell them to send you something in writing; but I'm betting you'll never get any type of letter. The phone # they used might be a CA #, but odds are good that they're actually calling from a phone bank located overseas.

I just started getting calls form them today. I have reported them them to BBB. My local sheriffs department. I would even report them to the state of California if they made it easier to contact them. They tired to tell me that they were a department in the state government. Nowhave to change all banking information and what sucks the most is that I can't just change everything because my husband check will take a couple of weeks to transfer and our tax check is on its way. I think if they keep calling me I will change my number. One other site says that they call this persons place of employment. Lucky for me I am a student and will be graduating in May and will no longer work for the company I work for.

Joie H, if you can't close your account right now, could you at least put this account on a deposit only status until your deposits come in, and open another account in the meantime? Couldn't hurt. These bogus companies are a complete pain and the scam calls seem to have reached epidemic proportions. A real shame.

I did some reseach and was able by spending a couple dollars :( find out that the owner of the number is a David Levy and the address that they are using is a house that is up for a quick sale. the address is 26815 wyatt Lane, Stevenson Ranch, CA 91381. I have found lots of David Levy's in California but most seem to be Doctors or lawyers. On is a business owner that has 1-4 employees and claims to be an electronics company.

Just got a call from these guys at work today. If they call me at work again, I'm going to give them the fax number, because I have already stated that I cannot nor will not receive collection calls at work. If they'd give me information for sending a cease and desist letter, you bet I would. They are a scam, they do not respond to "this is being taped" except to say they are taping it on their end and they will not put it in writing. I will not pay any debt that cannot be verified in writing, and I will not pay anything over the phone with my new account information. To further protect yourself, look up your rights with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (or something like that), there are rules that they must follow. I have learned as most have said, "They cannot throw you in jail for an unpaid debt". Also remember, they have to be able to prove that you intended to fraud. I know I didn't intend to fraud so that proof will be hard to come by.

I got a call from The Department of Crime today and asked what this was regarding and the person told me that I owe 1250.00 on a internet payday loan and I asked when it happened and they said dec 2010. I said I have proof that it never happened and she said that I should bring my proof to court cause I will need it. I said well I will wait for your papers to arrive and I will see you in court and in the meantime here is my attorneys number. They tried this on me last year also and I am still waiting on those papers to arrive. What a scam! I have filed a complaint with the FTC and the attorney generals office.

I recently received a call from the Dept of Crime Prevention and they claim to be a lawfirm. They gave me the same generic message about them having an affidavit in front of them with my legal case number and personal info on it. Then they start reading off my name, address and last 4 digits of my SS#. At this point they tell me that they are going to serve me with a summons at my place of business on a past due loan but I know that I don't have any open loans and haven't had any in over a year. So I tell them that I want to investigate and that I will call them back on Monady afternoon. At which point I contact me bank and open a new acct just in case they have more info than I think they do. I also contacted the FTC and put a fraud alert on my credit report, I've contacted the Attorney General & my local Police Dept.

FYI... I looked up this company and found the owner, partent company and their partners info share it with the FTC.

Unfortunately a lot of these companies share their customers' information with others and I'm guessing that's where a lot of these scam artists are getting their information. As stated above, don't admit over the phone to owing anything, tell them to send you something in writing regarding the supposed debt, and keep filing those complaints. Especially if they're representing themselves as a legitimate law enforcement agency or government agency, they're breaking some serious laws.

Thanks so much! I'm glad it's not just me going through this annoying mess. You all are right. They threaten that they'll serve you papers at work and it never happens. I asked to speak to the guy's supervisor and the supervisor's supervisor so I could get to the bottom of these bogus phone calls. He said he couldn't tell me. What?!?!

I appreciate the suggestions which I'll do asap!
