One of the items on my report was from a company called Asset Acceptance for ALMOST 6K. I was floored. I sent them a validation letter (form I found on line). Here is the response letter I got..."We are in receipt of your correspondence regarding information reported by a credit reporting agency related to the above referenced account. We have reviewed the information your provided (val. letter), as well as our notes and the information provided from the original creditor.
As a result of our investigation we have reported your account as "disputed" to the credit reporting agencies.
and then it is signed....what the heck does that mean? They are disputing their own information? Someone please help! Thanks!!!

The account shown as 'disputed' is better because no other agency will try to collect for this account. However, you need to dispute with the credit bureaus also for fixing other incorrect items. They will conduct an investigation and give you the results within 30 days. You will get your copy updated at your mailing address.
Highlight all the items that are shown incorrectly in your file. Send your letter through certified mail with return receipt requested and keep copies documented in a file. You need to fix your report as early as possible because the incorrect entries are hurting your credit scores.
Asset Acceptance
Thanks for the reply. I still do not understand what they mean when they say "They contacted the Credit Bureaus to report this as disputed"
How are they going to dispute their own info they put on there? Can you clarify.
Thanks again!

Asset Acceptance is a collection agency that might have been working on a particular account hired by the original creditor. After you requested them with the debt validation, I suppose they contacted the OC with the specific details they had and it might not have matched with the details with your creditors. At the end, this item got reported as 'disputed' in your file.
Now, since the collection agency is marked in your file, you should try to get them off from your file. Send a letter in writing to them mentioning that their reporting is derogatory to your file, so they should remove their entry. Send your letter through certified mail with return receipt requested and keep copies documented for records. If you don't get any response from them within 30 days, you can dispute with the CRA and request them to run an investigation. They will be able to update your file.
