a goggle search showed it is a scam.do not call this idiot back.he just wants to try to scare money out of you.did this idiot give any name of said plaintiff?again a search for the number you gave came up zero.was there a different number on your caller id?that might help.

Just curious, did he give the name of the company/institution he worked for? Many of these scam artists use semi-official sounding names to scare people into sending them money. I agree with paulmergel, don't bother calling them back. If they call YOU back, don't admit over the phone to owing anything and if you feel like talking to them, tell them they MUST send you something in writing. I'm betting you'll never, ever get a letter.

No, he did not give me the Plaintiff's name but said I could call that number to see try to work things out. He also said that he would be coming to see me either at work or home to serve my papers. He said I am being charged with writing bad checks, which I know I haven't. It could have to do with an old payday loan that one of these companies claim i owe, but I don't know who it is. I called the number and received a recorded message of "thanks for calling United, if you know your parties extension enter it now or dial 0 for the next available operator. I figure it is a scam but I have to admit the guy did sound intimidating and definitely was trying to scare me. Luckily I don't scare easy.

And there was no caller id. My voicemail only said it came from an external number, they had blocked theeir number so I could not trace it.

He did not telll the name of the plaintiff. When I called the number I got a recording saying you have reached United and if you know your parties extension to dial it now or dial 0 for an operator. I just hung up. It's just weird and quite upsetting to get a call like that at work.

This is a typical threat made by an online illegal lender, or a bottom feeder collection firm who is attempting to collect for an online illegal lender. Don't give them any information, instead, try to retrieve as much information from them as you possibly can, ei., their name, address, direct phone number, name of company, name of employee you are speaking with, name of their manager, fax number. Then, file a complaint against them with your state attorney general and the FTC, and your state regulator. there are several united's.none are legit, and again nobody calls to say you will be served or charged with a crime ahhead of time.file a police report for the threats.then use the number you have to file AG,AND FTC complaints.just know this couldn't be more bogus, and a complete scamming bottomfeeder.try not to talk to them and look uo your state laws in regards to recording calls and using messages in a lawsuit as you suing them is more likely than them actually doing what they threaten.

It's up to you, but be prepared to be harassed and threatened, and please try to obtain all the information from them as you possibly can, even note what they say to you in the form of harassment. You didn't mention what state you are in, the reason I bring that up is because some states allow recording phone calls without the other permission. A recording of them harassing you would make a great case to sue them for non compliance of the FDCPA. Please read my thread at the link I gave you above on how to deal with these types of calls. You may need to play with them a little in order to get information out of them.

(oops, hit the 'post' button prematurely!) If you call them back, as mentioned above, unfortunately they WILL try all kinds of threats, will more than likely use semi-legal sounding jargon, etc., as this is the way these scammers operate to scare people into sending money. You can try and get as much information as possible, but I'm betting they won't give out much. And of course any questions you have about the info they DO give your or anything else related to the call, THIS is the place to ask. please keep us posted.

I received a message from a blocked number from a caller named Mia Shaw on my voice mail and she referenced my married and maiden names, said she had been to my house and place of employment (I'm not employed) and was trying to serve me a summons for bad cheques.
I've not written a bad cheque since I was 18 (almost two decades ago).
She gave me the "plaintiff" phone number of 888-237-1265, which I've not called.
I did however call the County Sheriff's office (which has no summons for me), and the State Attorney's office (which said the referenced case number is not a valid Florida case number and they've nothing on me).
It sounds like quite a scam.
