I just received a letter from Javitch, Block & Rathbone in Cleveland, OH, of which I am a resident, for a debt owed to Citibank in the amount of $5,001.89. I was paying this account a year ago under a payment plan with set terms.
In July of last year I lost my job and called Citibank many times to inform them of my recent loss of employment and to get enrolled in a hardship program. I was told that I had to wait until the account was at least two months past due before I could enroll in any such program. I waited and then enrolled in a hardship program.
After two months I saw that my account was being illegally negatively amortized. I called Citibank and was told that this would be corrected but was not guaranteed how and by when. I cancelled my payments since this problem was not corrected within two weeks of brining it to Citibank's attention.
Three months later I receive a letter from the law firm stating that they now represent Citibank for my debt. From everything I've read about this firm, I understand it will eventually go to court. I would like to try to avoid that and settle. However, I am still unemployed and was wondering if anyone has any advice of what I can do before it does go to court. Should I contact the law firm and express my desire to stay out of court and settle?

No, I do not have the funds available to settle. I have been unemployed since July of last year, going on 7 months now.
I don't want this to go to court - I feel that that would be the worst possible thing to happen. Or is going to court not as bad as I'm making it out to be?
Do I have any options? What do I do?

Is it a lost cause to even try to contact the law firm and see if anything can be worked out?
What happens when I go to court? Is that the only way to work something out in regards to payment arrangements? When I get a judgment against me what does that mean, can it mean a number of things such as wage garnishment, a lien against my house, etc.?
Thank you for all of your help. I am so surprised it got to this point so fast.
