I'm told I have an outstanding credit card debt from 2001. I did at that time but paid it off to another company like ER Solutions says they are. I can't get canceled checks. Do I have a leg to stand on or do I have to pay this again??

If you have paid off the debt, then there is no need to make further payments. If any collection agency is claiming that you still have an outstanding credit card, then you can show them your payment receipts. If they are calling you regarding any other debt, then you can settle the debt after it has been properly validated.

Ok, I am assuming that you are considering “cancelled checks” as proof of payment. But what I meant to say was that, the OP may have some other documents (statements, letters, receipts, etc.) which may prove that he has paid off the debt. OP has said that he can’t get cancelled checks. But he has not said that he doesn’t have any other document regarding the payment of the debt. And the cancelled check is not the only proof of payment. It proves that a person has made the payment. But it does not prove what the payment was made for. So, if he can show the receipt, then he can easily prove that the payment has been made and he won’t have to pay it again.

However, I agree that if he does not have any other documents proving that he has indeed made the payment, then he has to pay it again.

Sorry Nelly, but a cancelled check it pretty well the only proof a CA is going to accept for proof of payment. ( A copy of a paid money money order or certified check....not the receipt portion) Or a settled or paid in full letter. Anyone paying a CA should have put notes on the memo line saying what the payment was for. CA's dont send statements or receipts.
