How do I know if a collection company is legitimate. Had 3 calls this week telling me they had papers ready to serve me. These are all old PDL from 2-3 years ago, but have been laid off, could not pay, now they are threatening me with serving papers. I am finding one of them , a web page on line, but not very detailed, could be a cover? One is Federal check recovery out of Lawrenceville, Ga phone number888-778-6049, one was Southwest group, Alternative Dispute , out of Arizon phone number 877-277-7535 and last was United claims services out of New York phone number 866-754-5354. I can start taking care of these, I was stupid and gave bank info out of fear, but have a few days to cancel and contact bank if they are not legitimate.I just dont want to have them show up. If I make the payments to all of these I will be force to short pay car payment and other bills I need to take care of Help Me someone?

Go to the PayDay loan section here and it has ALL the info you need to fight these. First off, DO NOT give ANY BANK info, your being scammed. NO ONE will call ahead and tell you they are going to serve you papers-thats the first red flag that its a scam. Process servers DO NOT call ahead of time, NEVER. Go to the payday loan section and read all you need to do. Next, cancel your bank account, they WILL empty it and come back for more and before you you told them to, I am surprised they have not already emptied it, close that account NOW!

well then you don't engage them at all.fist off implying you commited a crime(which check fraud is)is against the law.second since these were internet you never gave them a check so they broke the law again.third since they are not legal they want to threaten and harrass.here is what you do.

1)file police reports for the threats as again they broke the law
2)file AG and FTC complaints against these places using any infi you have on them
3)ignore them,ot hang up when they call.they want someone to argue with and threaten don't give them that.

btw my rule is if a number is blocked, spoofed,or unfamiliar i don't even answer.let it go to v-mail.

But How do I know for sure? Two of them emailed payment agreements. I just am afraid if I dont pay them , I will have someone showing up at work.
I would like nothing better than to not pay them and tell them next time they call that the call is being recorded. Is it too late to stop all this? First payment not due until Monday and that is a credit card, I can cancel that, next payment is the 31st of March so I have timie to work with the bank.
