Still trying to settle on a couple of accounts but have settled the bulk of my unsecured debt. Got a rude awakening today when I got a statement in the mail from Chase showing that the settlement amount that I gave them had only been applied to my total balance! Talk about infuriated!

Fortunately, I had kept a record of all calls (date, time, individual, subjects discussed, any confirmation numbers given) and correspondence. A call to Chase sorted it out as it just seems like one hand doesn't know what the other is doing and they had everything in my file as it should be but I thought that it might come to a fight.

The person with whom I had dealt with at Chase on the settlement was actually very squirrelly at the time in regard to what she would say on the phone as I had asked her to state specifically that this was going to be settled and that Chase wouldn't be trying to take the funds and simply apply them to the balance rather than regarding the matter as paid in full. Another reason to try and get something in writing BEFORE sending funds, also.

Everything turned out fine but I thought that I'd relate the experience to reinforce to people the importance of NOT having a lot of trust in these matters. Or, perhaps you should "trust but prepare".

Might be the way they do their statements. With my Citibank my statement showed what I paid but had the full balance. After the 4th payment, I received a statement showing a $0 balance. Each company is different, but it bodes well to keep records of all settlements, etc. in case it rears its' ugly head again. I would hold that information safe until death....:D
