Now that my initial panic has worn off, I need some help, or just even words of encouragement from someone who has survived this situation.

About an hour ago a policeman showed up at my front door  with a paper that says a legal action has been filed against me demanding relief, and unless a written defense is made by myself or an attorney within 20 days, there will be a default judgement. I owe the money, I want to pay it off, it's just that for the last two months it's been payments or food, not both. What would be lovely is for them to just drop the suit, and for me to resume making payments until it's paid in full, this is my only debt, what are the chances of that happening?

The debt is an old Discover Card that I originally negotiated a settlement on once it went into collections. I paid the balance agreed upon for several months, on time, until it became impossible to do for a 2 month space until I found my new job that will actually make me money, not just cover the gas it takes to get there. I have received no communication, no phone calls, letters, e-mails, until this summons from their attorney. The debt is still with the original creditor.

I have nothing. Nothing they can take, nothing I can sell. I work for minimum wage (sometimes less if the restaurant is slow). In a couple weeks I will have a better job, one that pays me no matter how slow business is, thank God.

First thing I need help with is the defense letter. I'm reading on here that it's absolutely vital to respond, either affirming all debt or denying it. Does anyone know of a good sample letter that would help me get the wording right? It needs to sound professional and thorough, and maybe even the teensiest bit intimidating? There's no way I can afford an attorney, and I have no cash to do a lump sum settlement.

Please help me, I just can't seem to get my head on straight here, and thenk you in advance.
