unknown car lien

A friend of mine just got a new truck from a dealer using a car he was buying before the truck as collateral. At the time there was not a lien on it but he still owed money on it. Can the seller of the car put a lien on the car last minute, without the buyer present and without consent? We live in Missouri, if that helps.

I put a lien on somebodys house once. They weren't present, as it was just paperwork filed with the court. I did, however, have a judgement against them through court process (in which they were notified).
