I recieved a phone call today from HPC.. naive of me I thought it was for a job I had applied for and got sucked in to a discussion of a debt 4 years ago I havee. I purchased some couches and paid for a couple of months. As life went sour, I stopped paying and recieved letters but I neglicted them at my fault. My debt is 2,847 dollars and this guy stated that this phone call was to prevent from them taking me to court. He offered a payment plan for two months, and I stated how will I pay that, He later went on to say I will face the consequences of jail time at the county jail???Being fairly young and no bad credit history, Im speechless and in awe on what to do. I have a family of 5 and cant afford an attorney for advice. please help me as i am clueless. There is no way I can afford to pay in two months. He said I basically walked into the store and stole the darn couches cause I havent paid for them, in which tht was not my intention.

well threatening jail is against the law as debts are civil matters, and chances are the debt was sold long before this call.next time this idiot calls demand details in writing.it is your right under the FDCPA.if they refuse use the name HPC to file AG complaints as again threatening jail is against the law.then file a police report for the threat then if they refuse to send at least a collection letter then ignore them once you file the report/complaint.

I asked for something to be sent in writing.. he said I will be served and that will be in writing.. i was like ???seriously??? I did however recieve a collections letter from a different collection agency, not being HPC. I understand I am at fault, but this seems a big gulp to swallow. I also read that this could be just a tactic to collect the money.
