Hi everyone. I wanted to see if I can get some advise. A little over a year ago I was contact by someone from AMO claiming they were collecting for unpaid state tax from 2005. I paid my taxes in 2005 and she said to fax over documentation. I did so and then a week later I get a call from the same women claim that I still owed for 2007. I filed my 2005-2007 taxes all at the same time and had to dig through my records to see if I didn't pay. I never could find my records of paying and 2007 was a rough year so I might not have been able to pay. I was fresh out of college and not real responsible. I asked to make payments and she said I had to pay in full. I explained that I couldn't at the time and she told me that if I didn't pay they would garnish my wages. The woman was very rude and I was even trying to pay my debt. I did find it strange that they first said I owed for 2005 and then came back with 2007. That was the first problem.
Next, about 6 months later(april.2010) I get a letter from them saying I can split my debt into 3 payments. I am in a little bit better situation now and call the same woman to let her know I was going to send in my first payment. She told me that I couldn't split it because I make too much money(I wish). I was called back a couple hours later by this woman and told I could split the total into 2 payments. I couldn't afford that and told her I would have to save money to pay it.
Skip forward to 2 weeks ago. I found out that I am getting my federal tax refund for enough to pay that debt so I call this lady to get a total balance sent to me. She tells me the person that sends that information out is out of the office until next week so it can't be sent and tells me the balance. $1154.54. What I am failing to mention that this woman that I am dealing with this whole time is AWFUL! Here I am trying to pay and she is making it the most difficult process I have ever been through. Not to mention she tells me they are going to tax my tax refund to pay the debt.
Yesterday I get a letter in the mail from AMO saying they have received my debt and I have 30 days to respond or the debt will be valid. Why am I just now getting this letter over a year later?
Can someone give me so advice? I really don't know what to do. I want to pay this off and at this point I can but I don't want to be a victim here and have them charge me more or keep increasing what I owe. Thanks in advance.

Well first contact the IRS themselves and find out what is going
Well first contact the IRS themselves and find out what is going on. You can also get your 2007 return from them and see whats what.
I am not sure if it is a legitimate debt, that is why you should contact the IRS...because when the state doesn't get the money they think they should, you get slapped with a tax lien...that happened to me for the state of California...they suddenly decided my hubby worked there and wanted the taxes...but we haven't been in Cali for over 10+ years!
Contact the IRS.
