I received a call from an unknown number today.....Someone named Scott Matthew called me and sounded very rude on the voicemail he left. He stated that he was calling regarding a claim that was filed against me and was scheduled to be at my place of employment the latter part of this week. And he even said the name of the office I work at! He said that this was a serious matter with his client and that I should call right away. He said failure to call will result in him coming to my place of employment to serve me with these papers....and he left this number

1-877-835-5827

I can not think about what this would be referring to..can they really come to my work? I googled this number and cant' find ANYTHING on it...

Please help, I'm freaking out!!!

Have you taken out any PayDayLoans and then defaulted on them? Do you have any other collections (credit cards, repossed cars, etc) that you are in default on? Make any one made enough to sue you? If not, it's most likely mistaken identity. Call him and find out what it about. If they say you owe anything, tell them you don't know anything about it and demand a letter of collection. Wait on that, then depending on what it is for act accordingly. If it is not your debt/issue then notify them of this, if it is, well there are ways of handling the problem so that you can get it paid off without anything else happening.

While some states may have laws preventing it, a person can be served at work, and some states incourage it since there is usually less fighting/yelling/dodging/hiding if a process server shows up to work instead of hunting you down at home or on the street somewhere.

From a process server site
"Each state has its own unique laws about how documents can be delivered and when and where a process server can approach a target. In some states, a process server can approach anyone at anytime in any place to serve documents. In other states, stricter rules for process serving apply. For example, in Virginia and Florida you cannot serve someone who is traveling to or from a court, and you cannot serve someone in their home on a Sunday. Some states do not allow anyone to be served on holidays
Since laws vary from state to state and can be complex, it is important to hire a professional, local process server – someone who understands the law and can make sure your documents are served legally."

and from the Sacremento County public law library
"Documents may be served at any location. This can be a home or business address, or anywhere else the party can be found. "

What state are you in first off? There are various different laws in different states. If they called a co-worker and discussed anything with them, then this is a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. For this, you can file a complaint with the FTC and the AG. I'd still make contact and find out what it is about if I were you though.

Well IF there are threats of arrest, then that is yet something else to use to file suit and press for criminal charges. For this, I'd suggest contacting to see what it's about (record the call if possible...check state laws before, some require notice, others don't). And all their information? I doubt it was all their information, even the worst lowest slimeball outfit is normally not going to give out SSN, mother's maiden name, bank and routing numbers etc. Which if your dealing with a PDL that would be included in "all my information". Until the OP clarifies we can only assume what was said. I assume they used the old bit about soandso owes us money, we tried to reach them at this number but no response, tell them it's urgent the get in touch with us, or may have even thrown in one of my favorites soandso is in serious trouble and we need to work this out. I've filed numerous complaints on that one. Until you know the facts, it's best to not jump the gun. And at times there is noticve given by the company when a suit is filed. I was called/mailed information they a company was filing suit for collections. They then filed for collections. They then garnished my wages. They are now in SLOW process of repaying me all my money, but that's a whole other story.
