I got a call today from an unknown number asking for either my mother or myself. I explained neither could come to the phone and advised I would call them back. I did so, and the lady who answered the phone asked me for the last 4 of my social and my current address. I explained I was not comfortable verifying that over the phone. I suspect that if this is a debt collector, it is from a private student loan I took out years ago. But did I do the right thing by not verifying this information with them? Also, she never explained to me that she was calling from a law firm, just the name of the company sounded like one.

It sounds fishy. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any help.

Nothing fishy about it. Collection agencies can call 8am to 9pm 7 days a week.
Since you refused to ID yourself, they are following the law by simply giving you the name of their company....not what they do.

Since they now know they have you, you and your mom could/should expect a summons. Private loans will sue all parties, particularly if they are being difficult.
