Depending on what state you reside, there are programs for people who are having difficulty. You can start with your gas company and ask if anything is available.
Check your state website. Depending on your income (or lack thereof) you might be eligible for assistance. You can also check with social services.
My daughter was able to get a lump sum from the gas company as well as state aid. We live in NJ
