I got a call from an unknown number. The accent was foreign so I couldn't understand the name. They mentioned that the matter was time sensitive and that legal action or credit reporting can be taken. When I asked for validation they became very aggressive, saying they would email me something or call me back in an hour. After some back and forth they hung up.

First, does that statement qualify as threatening legal action without the intent to do so, or should I be worried that they mean legal action. Second, should I worry about credit reporting? Third, what good would contacting the original creditor do for me.

I think this may be a case of scam. You have taken the correct step by asking them to send you a debt validation letter. Next time they call you, ask for their address. Once you get their address, make a written request to them for a debt validation letter. If they don't send you a debt validation letter, then you can send a Cease and Desist letter to them.
I don't think they will take any legal action against. It is just a false threat. Scammers often use this tactic to make money out of consumers.

If you really owe the debt, then you can contact the original creditor and repay the debt.

You can request the collection agency for a debt validation letter via certified mail with a return receipt request. If they don???t reply then send them a ???Cease and desist??? letter. You can also file a complaint against this collection agency as they have violated the FDCPA rules by threatening you.
No, you need not to be worried about legal action. This is because; they are trying to threat you. You need not to be worried about credit reporting also for the same reason. The best option is to contact with the original creditors and negotiate with them and payoff the debt.
