I recently had an encounter with dorsey thornton, i never recieved any notifiction of any debt, then they called me stating there would be a warrant out for my arrest if i didn't pay them $5000. the woman i spoke with didn't let me get a word in, instead of answering my questions just yelled at me about the law. told me i was a criminal and had committed a felony, and deserved to go to prison. she accomplished her goal of getting me emotional and we conference called two of my family members to attempt to come up with the money, she was rude to both of them, and told them i was a criminal and she was going to have me arrested as well. i still have no idea what exact amount, if any, i actually owed to the original creditor, she did not answer any of my questions. I don't know what to do about the situation, i know the money is just lost on my part, but what, if anything, can i do about the illegal practices they used as far as threatening my arrest and telling me i am a criminal?

Hi!
Welcome to the forums!

Send a written notice to them to validate the debt. If they don't validate the debt, then send a Cease and Desist letter to them. If they still continue to harass you, then you can take legal steps against them. Another point I would like to add is, under FDCPA laws, the collection agencies are not allowed to threat consumers. You can report the issue to FTC.

not to be mean, but what just happened to the OP was an outright scam. Places that do to them what they just did, will not in any way shape of form send any kind of letter. They were outright scammed. Telling them to ask for a DV letter is like asking for the sun to shine in the middle of a hurricane, it is not going to happen. They will never be able to recoup the money they just lost cause these outfits at least the majority are not even here in this country. They have to take it as a lesson learned that anyone who threatens on a phone-just hang up on them, plain and simple.

yep take it as a lesson learned as there really is no real info on this bottomfeeder, and if you asked for something in writing you would have been yelled at worse.remember this for next time as nobody can have you arrested for owing a debt,or is allowed to insult, yell,or cuss at you.if they do hang up,and file a police report.i will ask how you paid this slime bottomfeeder.there is an outside chance to get the $$$ back, but it would depend on how you paid these cretins.

follow the advice above mine.file a police report using any numbers you have.again there really isn't any solid info on them so just file the report and ignore their voice mails.if you get caught on the phone hang up without a word.that for now is all you can do.they are a scamming bottomfeeder that should be reported, not paid.
