Garnishing fixed income wages

Hi I will be getting a Social Security Disability Settlement and have been without income for a couple of years. I have a lot of credit card debt from a few years ago in Ca and haven't received any letters in about a year. However, I am not sure if that is because they may not know where I live as I have no bank account or home address. Will they be able to garnish my wages once I open a bank account? I also haven't run a credit report yet. Could you please suggest what resource I should use? Maybe the creditors have already charged off the debt. If so, would it be reflected on the report? If it was charged off would they still be able to go back and garnish the wages in CA? PLease Help???

soaplady, as always is correct !... as i am awaiting an ssdi hearing (with hope to be approved this time around), my ssdi attorney told me to make sure (pending approval) the bank account used for ssdi pay, should not have any other funds deposited into the account, it should be dedicated to ssdi/ssi benefits only and it is best to have it sent direct deposit so that you have proof that all the money in the account is from ssdi pay..
just saying what my atty said in re of it...
