Judy,
1. This could be a scam. It doesn't make sense why they EVEN try collecting this but than again debt collectors (90%) and scam artist are scum of the earth.
2. Find proof that you paid the $89. Look for receipts, monthly stubs or digital copies. I know it was 12 years ago but if you paid with a check, go to the bank and see if they can pull the records before you EVEN think about paying these goofs back.
3. They can't garnish your wages UNLESS they sent you letters in the past and you ignored them or forgot to reply to them within 30 days?
4. Remember this was 12 years ago! There are SOL (Statutes Of Limitation) laws that protect us. In Virgina the SOL is 3 years for credit cards. They about 9 years too late to collect lol.
If I were you...I would send them a letter telling them about the SOL in your state. Explain to them that IF they continue to collect, that you will take legal actions against them. I bet they will stop, and if not...sue them :)
