Hi,
I'm also in California and I can tell you to find out if any business is legal, you can go to the State Dept of Corporations website (under CA.Gov), and check under the Business License section. If there's no license, there's a good chance that they are illegal.
How much are your loans for? In California, the max is $300 ($255 directly to you with a $45 fee), so if they are for more, they are illegal. If you find out that your loans are illegal, the first step is closing your checking account and getting a new one, because the first time your lenders discover you're not going to pay them, they will start hitting your account, I guarantee it. You MUST do this ASAP!

Payday lending is legal in California. You can contact with the California Department of Corporations to know whether or not internet payday loan companies from where you have taken the loan are licensed to operate in your state. If they are licensed, then you will have to pay the principal amount with interests and other fees. Otherwise, you are required to pay only the principal amount.
