You should send a debt validation letter in writing to them first. If they are able to validate the debt properly, then only you should think about settling the account.

Please remember to request written confirmation of the settlement prior to forwarding funds to Northland. After you receive a settlement letter, and you're confident that the terms are what you discussed, you can call and make the payment over the phone. If you're not comfortable paying over the telephone, you can also send them a check, as long as you're certain it will be in their office by the deadline.
