A few months back, my mother-in-law died. No estate, no money, had been living off of Social Security with another one of her daughters for years.
Well...today I got a letter from Asset Acceptance addressed To Whom It May Concern, regarding the 'estate' of my deceased MIL. They've kindly offered to settle a $4000 debt that she had with a department store for 70% off the balance.
But I'd better act quick, they warn, because this offer is limited and might not be renewed.
They'd like to clear up this 'potential probate action to be taken on this account'.
I bet they would, but seeing as how her 'probate' consisted of bagging up her old clothes and sending them to Goodwill and then flushing her unused medicines down the toilet, I'd say they are pretty much out of luck on that front.
I'm almost tempted to write a 'From Whom It May Concern' letter explaining the situation and ending it "Too bad for you."
Anyone have some Pros and Cons of doing so to suggest?

Hi John,
I'm sure that Asset Acceptance is surely out of luck as your mother in law has no estate which can be used to settle the debt!! :) You can inform them about the same and ask them to do whatever they can. They won't be able to take any actions against you or anyone because you're in no way responsible for the debt!!
Take care.

Dang, it feels good to know that those bottom-feeders won't get a single dime.
