I would first like to say that I am embarrassed how little I know about all this kind of thing. I received a letter from Northland Group, saying I owe X amount of dollars of an unpaid store CC debt. They offered a settlement. I cannot recall even going into this store in the last 4 years. The last statement I could find was from April 2007. I wrote on the statement that I paid the just over 100 dollar balance. I truly do not think I went into that store after 2007.

I had a PO box where I used to get my mail, until I moved to the place I am in now. My roommate still uses the PO box for their mail. I came home tonight to see this letter for me that was sent to the PO box. Northland Group said I had 30 days to respond, but I just got the letter from the roommate, and it is about a week past those 30 days.

What is so strange is that I am quite sure I paid off the balance of that store card and I never received any statements to tell me otherwise!! I would have received SOMETHING in the mail these last 4 years, right?! My roommate is not usually careless about mail.

So, I missed the 30 day thing and I don't know the first thing about what to do. I have read some bad things about Northland. Can I get to the bottom of how I didn't receive any store statements if I supposedly owe this money? Like I said, I am embarrassed at how little I know what to do. I am scared. Even though the amount is less than 200 dollars, it's a lot for me right now.

At least I now know who that really rude person was who called and snarled at me when I asked who he was.

Help?!:(

What you need to do is respond to the letter your received from Northland. Send them a validation of debt request. Tell them you have no knowledge of owing the debt they claim is due. Ask for PROOF that you do owe it.

Send your letter certified with a return receipt requested and hang on to the return receipt when you get it so you have proof that they received your validation request.

You can just send a simple letter, in your own words asking that they provide validation of the debt and verification that you, in fact, owe it.

I found the store credit card and called the customer service number. They said that it was, indeed, sent to collections. Because of that, they had no other information for me when I asked why I wouldn't have received any statements or any past due/we are going to send this to collections if you don't pay it, letters.

Since the store did send it to collections, is it a done deal that I will be paying this debt that I don't remember having and having received no statements or anything else? How could I have not received anything in 4 years from the store?!

Thanks so much for the responses!

first check your state SOL(statute of limitations)as if you are saying that the last payment,or first delinquency was in 2007 then some states have an SOL of 4yrs meaning northland can't sue and win because the SOL is up.now even if the SOL isn't up that doesn't mean you pay on this.that is what validation is for.make this place prove they have legal right to collect.also since the original creditor can't give any info other that it was sent to collections just means they sold it.chances are it went to a couple other JDB'S before northland got it so go to the DYI tab up top and use the template DV letter.then send it certified mail return receipt.just know that if you are not sent notices when a debt is delinquent.it is most likely it was sold.that is what happened here.get the letter out asap.
