Chase bank won't close my account!
Date: Tue, 09/27/2011 - 11:03
So I went to Chase bank, and they refused to turn my account into a "deposit only" account or put a debit hold on it. I spoke to the rep, the manager, and also the claims rep, claims manager, and general manager on the phone. They refused to do it and said if I were to close it, they still have to let the payments get through.
Is there anything I can do? The only thing I can think of is to clear my account to a balance of 0, then turn off all "overdraft protections" so chase will not honor any overdrafts on my account. Are there any other ideas on what I could do?
Try going into an actual branch and talking to someone in person
Try going into an actual branch and talking to someone in person. Explain what's happening, the illegality fo the loans, etc.
Yes.
This was all in person at the local branch. Talking to the rep, then the manager. The Claims Rep and Manager were on the phone through the local branch Rep.
They claim they cannot stop debits because I gave out my account information to these lenders. And therefore they cannot stop the lenders from taking money out of my account.

Did you explain to them that you have already paid off the loans
Did you explain to them that you have already paid off the loans (or overpaid) and that you've revoked ACH authorization and yet these companies refuse to stop withdrawing money from your account? Did you ask to fill out a fraud affidavit?
What state are you in?
Try again with the branch as stated above and if that doesn't work, contact corporate to report that your account has been compromised due to fraudulent activity. Also let them know about the bad customer service you received at the branch.

I did tell them that I have paid off these loans and overpaid them. Did not make a difference. I did not mention a fraud afadavit, that will be my next course of action. I did not yet send emails to the lenders in fear that they will stick me with a ton of ACH Debits on my account, but if you think it would be better to send the emails first and THEN talk to my bank along with my statements revoking ACH access, I can do that.
This is in Wisconsin. I can stop by the branch again after work in a few hours.

I would say file a complaint against with your state of banking
I would say file a complaint against with your state of banking and insurance commission because they can't refuse to close your account Chase is full of crap this is why I don't mess with them. They ad my car loan I paid it off 2 years ago and they are still reporting.

You have to keep in mind that technically you authorized the lender to take funds from your account.
However, you only authorized payments to be taken until the loan was paid. Since it's been paid, they do NOT have your authorization to take further funds from your account and doing so is STEALING and FRAUD!
Try that tack. If it doesn't work. Call corporate.
I would also go ahead and file your complaints against the PDLs with the FTC and the AG. And, file complaints against Chase with the OCC (which is who regulates national banks) and the Federal Reserve Bank.
This is utterly ridiculous.
