What can i do if i have a judgement from a lawyer who is no longer in business and may possibly be deceased?

I need to get the judgement either settled or preferably vacated but have no way of locating him.

Thanks

Thanks!!

I was told to try to have it dispute thru credit reporting agencies first.

Type: Abstract Judgement

As it appears on my credit report there is only a filed date. Status is blank reported date is blank verified date is blank.

Only items that show are the case # the lawyers name and filed date.

No he was my attorney for a custody case i had.
Im NOT paying him as he gave me incorect court dates, didnt show up himself and showed up late. So much so that the judge advised him that he showed up in her lookin as he did that day he would not be allowed in her court room
Regardless of why im not paying if i were to want to settle this i have no means of contacting him and the court does not have any updated contact information for him. He is NOT listed with the BAR association any longer either. I was told by the person who retained this lawyer for me that he is now deceased.

If disputing it with credit agencies doesnt work should i just let this go until it falls off my credit report?

You can get a copy of the judgment from the court. It will say something like "abc collecting vs. you". This will give you the name of the agency that hired the lawyer, and they hold the judgment against you.
You can ask for a hearing, then you can ask for it to be sent to mediation. Mediation is typically very forgiving to the debtor.
If they have violated the FDCPA, you can file a counter-motion, and you are likely to win. If they didnt send you a warning stating you have 30 days to dispute the debt, then you can get $1000 off. If they called you twice in one day, you can get another grand. If they didnt make an effort to contact you, a few more. Usually they lose by default.
