Another Strange Phone Call... "Devon Reed"?
Date: Thu, 04/12/2012 - 08:27
I got home from work last night and there was a voicemail on the home phone, a number I don't give out(I did have a couple payday loans but I would never give my home number because my family members would investigate).
The loans are from January, I paid most of the principal amount but they were knocking me with the fees + bank fees from not having enough money to pay back, so I did what this website suggested, closing my bank account, writing each a letter stating they can't take money and to contact me for payment, etc since the loans are illegal in MA. No one contacted me! 3 of the lenders didn't have email addresses, phone numbers, or a website I could contact, just a fax number.
So now a person claiming to be "Devon Reed" who works for a "law firm" is saying there is a charge against me and he wants my work and home addresses to send me some papers or something. He told me to call the firm at "877-314-2328" and he called from "444-4508" which doesn't even have the area code, is it supposed to look like a local number?
I have no idea if it's real or not or how on earth they got my home phone number. I checked my credit reports online, there is nothing negative or any warning or anything, which I would think there would be if I was being charged.
If anyone has any recommendations on what to do, that would be great, because my family is worried I'm in trouble! Here are a few links about the same "Devon Reed" and what people say, they say it's a scam but I figured if I came here I could get more opinions:

It is a total scam. Stay off the phone and dont give them any info. If you must talk with then and they threatened to serve you, offer to meet them at your local police department.
please don't stress
do as soaplady advised.they can't do squat, and need to bring up crap like service, charges, and court to try and scare money out of people.i would file a police report as the threats were illegal, and tell everybody who they called that this is a total scam, and to treat them like it.
Hmm
Alright thank you for the answers! I haven't called back but they continue to call repeatedly. At least 4 times a day, living a message once and nothing the other times. They always say that I have been served or will be served papers of some sort and that it is my "final notification". I'm somewhat nervous because I'm living with my family and they don't know I took the couple loans and they think I'm fine so I don't want them to be disappointed...
I don't understand where and how they getting my home phone number, and now they called my father who I don't even live with. Should I continue to just ignore the calls?
yes
you have to come clean as bottomfeeding garbage can get numbers of family and friends easier than you think.best to let them know as he will keep calling and leaving messages loaded with threats as long as you try and hide this from them.they will treat him like the scammer he is if you tell them about the loans.

Alright so I decided to call them up, I just want this behind me so I talked about what was going on, who I owed money to, etc. I did forget one of my loans but I just found a paper I had written down from when I was repaying the loans. Apparently I didn't even make a payment to this one, so the amount I owe(from the loan) is $300, and thats what they want me to pay. I agreed to pay because I believe loans should be paid back, illegal or not. The conversation was recorded on both ends and I just set up a bi-weekly payment plan for the amount.
May or may not be the right thing to do in some people's eyes, but I've really wanted this behind me since I took the loans...
I hope you did NOT give them access to your bank account.......t

hmm I don't know why i don't have permission to edit.. sorry for a 2nd post in a row..
should I try to make arrangements for a different method of payment? my bank account is empty anyways right now so i wouldn't have bothered with that(i just opened a new one, they hold any deposits for 14 days for the first month).
Also, they said they were a mediation firm which I'm assuming is correct. They said that if I did get a prepaid card, I could look online to see who took a withdrawal(I had asked how I know they are a real company and they explained kind of). Thought it would be a decent way to pay and didn't want to have to deal with MO's; I work all day so I rarely have time to go to the post office!
Hopefully this was a somewhat good decision; just pay my debt and get it off my shoulders. I've been thinking "when are they going to call me???" about these loans for a while, now I can get the largest one off my back...
no,no.no
while this forum advocates paying the principle on any illegal loan.you do not pay bottomfeeders that threaten like this one.they are not a "mediation firm"at all.they throw terms like that out there to scare money out of people.do not pay them.i guarantee they will call again for more once you give in.again i know you want to pay,but giving in to illegal threats is something i don't advise.it's your call though.another scenario is another piece of crap will call in the future about this.why?because bottomfeeders don't care and this one will give/sell your info to another at the drop of a hat.

Listen to Paul.
For illegal lenders, do not pay "mediation firms," law firms or collection agencies for defaulted payday loans. ONLY pay your original lender. If you can't find the original lender or they won't accept your payment, forget about it.

Ohh noo.. I probably shouldn't have agreed if they might sell my info or loan or ask for more.. I just wanted it off my back asap ... Even though I "agreed"over the point and they recorded it, could I call up and cancel this somehow?

You should call them and tell them that you have learned this was an illegal loan and they have no authority to collect on an illegal loan. Ask for their address and send them a cease and desist letter.
Also file complaints against them with your state's AG and the FTC. If you want to pay the principal balance of your illegal loan, call your original lender and work it out with them directly - and use a prepaid debit card.
yep
well first cancel the card as now that he has that he can still try to debit.don't give him even that chance.then do as ohiogal advised, but know this turd will try and convince you through lies and bullsh*t that he must be paid.btw i never heard you state that anything was sent to you either by mail,or email.sorry but the old"we have it on tape"is another tactic that is BS.why?because if he was recording every call then all the illegal verbage would on there as well.last thing, and shazzers gave this info out.do not just pay a voice on the phone.nothing in writing.nothing paid.remember that from now on.
Alright I'll definitely do all of these things now, even thigh I
Alright I'll definitely do all of these things now, even thigh I've read threads here, I still got overwhelmed by what they said.. You guys definitely make good points with the recording bs also.
Just to clarify my understanding of illegal loans, for instance, since I live in massachusetts and loans are illegal there, does this include lenders out of state? Because I have no idea where the lender resides... I don't want to say on the phone that the loan was illegal if thats not how it works.. I'm not sure if its like "you cant give a loan in massachusetts to a mass resident"or whether all loans are prohibited in mass from other states if this makes sense..
The good thing is that there is no money on the card...
It depends on who the lender was. Some aren't licensed anywhere
It depends on who the lender was. Some aren't licensed anywhere in the U.S. Some just might not be licensed in your state.

Hmm so they will not give me an address.. They are saying that they claim I purposely didn't pay the loan, and that anasazi is not pursuing this because of the loan amount, but instead for fraud. I mistakenly wrote in an earlier post they only wanted 300$, the principal, they wanted 510 but I bitched them out today and only want the principal now.. I don't understand what to say, I'm not aggressive or anything.. I lowered the payment but I feel like its just going to make it worse if I keep bitching.. Any ideas because I told them I agree to pay the 300.. I don't want to but I don't want to be sued or anything.. Ugh

Hmm anyone know why I can't ever edit my posts?
Anyways, so after reading what everyone has been saying in this thread, other threads, etc, I'm assuming this whole thing is just a scam.. When I had called them yesterday, they went on about how me "accepting" the loan online has nothing to do with what state I'm in, and that I purposely didn't pay back the loan, so the group(Anasazi) is trying to press charges or something. They kept saying that if I don't pay I will have to "show up" so I'm assuming either a lawsuit or something in court? Is this real whatsoever? Because I did send the group a letter stating if they want money, they have to contact me by phone or email or mail, and they never did!
Should I just refuse to pay them especially since they have not sent anything to me in the mail? No documents, I asked and they said that the lender or the "finder" has them, I can't quite remember which. $300 to an unknown entity over the phone is, well, stupid..

:/ anyone have any suggestions based on the newer info I've given? I kept getting them to lower the amount to 300$ but they said I have until tomorrow, monday, to get a payment option like a credit card, prepaid, bank account, etc. they said if I don't, they will put the "finders fee" of 200$ and up the amount to 710 total for fees, etc.. Ugh.. I've never had to do anything like this and I'm really nervous..

Are you listening to us or not?
This is a SCAM.
Why are you negotiating with these people?
Tell them to eff off and don't pick up the phone again when they call.
They CANNOT do anything to you.
Paying them will not make them go away; it will only make them come back for more because they'll know you're an easy mark.
Don't pick up the phone.
Don't argue with them.
The next time they call, tell them you know this is a scam and to not call you again and then DO NOT talk to them again.
File complaints with your state's AG and the FTC and leave it alone.
Period.
right on ohiogal
she is right.STOP TALKING TO THEM!!!!!!!!!!!they can't do squat and have only threatened illegaly.report and ignore.got it!

Alright I am trying to listen its just something I'm not used to... Its hard because they sound so true you know? I won't contact them anymore and just forget it. I was just trying to do what people said before, to call and tell them the loan was illegal etc, I was just mentioning that the only thing they said they would do is lower the payment. I didn't pay or give them any info to use. Its just hard to ignore the treats since this is the first time I've ever experienced this.
here
the reason they sound that way is because they are trained to sound that way.to lie out of their a$$,and to throw out terms that sound legit.they are slime who again need to be reported.not paid,or talked to.okay?if you can't deal withthem then again don't talk to them.all they have done is break the law with the threats, and calls.they want someone to harrass and argue with.don't give it to them.hope that explains it,and you will what needs to be done.

Its not that I didn't believe you guys, I was just nervous and not thinking especially when I first called them. I just thought maybe there could have been some truth to the whole thing, I mean apparently they have all the info about the loan.. I haven't called and haven't heard from them so thank you guys

Hey so this is kind of funny. I had mentioned I agreed to pay, and gave them the info for a prepaid card.. There was no money on the card, so as soon as they tried and failed getting a payment, yesterday, the "finder" person named devon reed called once again while i was at work. he didn't even give the same number for the "firm" to call, and the number he called from, "444-4508" doesn't even work. I'm assuming its meant to look like a local number without the area code, so I'm not sure what to put to try to call back. I've tried local area codes and codes from my district in my state, no luck.
Why would you want to call them back? And why are you giving th
Why would you want to call them back? And why are you giving them credit card numbers?

It was just a prepaid card I had. Like a gift visa gift card or something, it didn't have any money on it, though. before, when I was freaking out, I gave them the info to use as a payment because I was contemplating paying.. after a while I obviously decided not to because of all you guys' comments, so I didn't call the "firm" back to cancel or anything, just left it at that. they tried taking a payment yesterday, couldnt so "devon reed" called and gave me an "official notification" just like all the other calls. he actually just called again but i was in the shower!
I wanted to call back to ask for an address to send a cease and desist letter; the "firm" refused to give me one for "privacy concerns" so i thought if i called devon reed himself, ask for an address to send a letter to his firm or something along these lines. my family is nervous again, so I need these calls to stop. I'm assuming the only thing I can do right now is report the numbers/callers to someone, as I can't get any addresses.
The 2nd number for the "firm" is 888-247-9639 and it's for the same place, some company claiming to be "metro".
I had just thought if I sent the companies a letter, they would have to send me documents. this devon reed guy is claiming that he still has files and an "order" to hand me, don't see why he hasnt just given me anything.
They haven't given you anything because they don't have anything
They haven't given you anything because they don't have anything. As we've told you countless times, this is a SCAM collector. They're trying to extort money from you by scaring you into giving it to them.
It's all a bunch of bullshit and you keep listening to them and believing it.
STOP talking to these people and FILE COMPLAINTS with the FTC and your state's AG.
Don't answer the phone. Tell your family members to stop answering the phone.

Lol I don't believe it, I just wanted to mention it here. I haven't talked to anyone for a while, at least a week. Just wanted to send the c&d letter to stop the phone communication.
I'm going to report them, I do not believe what they are saying as I decided not to pay them over a week ago.
