Discover Card debt settlement
Date: Wed, 05/16/2012 - 08:30
can you please help me with advice on how to settle with Discover Card?
I am 6month due, my account is delinquent. I haven't' made payments for 6month, due to unemployment. I have stooped taking their phone calls. they send me a letter stating that they will take me to court, and they gave me the date until June 30, 2012 to pay off. if they don't hear from me, then attorney will have the case, etc
I spoke to someone today from Discover and explained them my situation, they offered me a program , like they do to most people. They said that I am not eligible for settlement, etc. I said i need to think about, called back, and decided not to go for the programing, and do a settlement despite of what they say. I read all the comments on this website, and i see that people do settle with them. So...should i hire a lawyer, or ...? I don't know any attorney that can help me with the settlement, can you suggest one?
my debt is not that high at all, but with all the fees that i accured it went up from $1200 to $2300 or something like that.
what should i do...please help me.
Thank you

I was in the exact same situation as you, same debt amount, received the intent to sue letter.I had until last day of this month.Settled Monday for 50% of balance,1271.00.I say wait until about a week before the deadline then ask them again about the settlement. They didn't offer it to me,i had to ask several times if there was one available.Kept trying to get me on the 0.99 % interest for 5 year plan. Also be careful how you answer the questions about your monthly bills. You have to show them you can't pay.Good luck
In such a situation, you can get third party help, i.e. a settle
In such a situation, you can get third party help, i.e. a settlement company, who can negotiate with Discover, on your behalf. The representatives of such companies usually have better negotiation skill; so, they may succeed in reducing your payoff amount to some extent.
However, you should be careful while choosing a settlement company since all of them are not reliable. Choose a company that has good BBB ratings and check the customer reviews to ensure that they deliver service what they promise.
I wish you good luck in your efforts to clear your debt. :-)

When Discover is threatening to litigate, going with a settlement company is a horribly bad idea. A settlement company is not going to represent you when Discover files suit. As a general rule going with a settlment company is a waste of money...you should always do settlements yourself.
