larger unsecured loan

we had a loan with HFC they tacked on a ridiculous amount of fee's etc and a 7,000 loan into a 15,000 balance. intreast was added. I argued with them for months... long story short my payment went up by 100 and we paid it down some. the loan is in default now and I received the letter telling me we have to pay $12,000 to pay debt off.
I dont have that kind of money. my credit has taken a huge hit bc of this debt..... what happens next? will they sue me? take out a judgement. JPF agents are ruthless and horrible. Just dont know what to so now
