I am a 50 yr old woman who's husband had brain surgery and is now on Social security disability. We do not own a home and have 27,000 in debt. He lost his insurance after 6 months away from his job. This was a little over a year ago. In order to keep his present insurance which is Family health plus through NYS we cannot make any more than 200.00 per month over his disability check. We are currently 300.00 short a month in paying our bills. How can I pay the debt with out increasing my income? If I go to work it will cancel his insurance and he will not be able to survive with out treatment.

At least in California, creditors cannot garnish social security benefits, or income that is used to meet ends, like food, and clothing. I would suggest to either stop paying, or try to settle with them with 1 fat payment. Usually they would settle with .75 to the dollar if you take this option.

Note- This is is not legal advice.
