Is this a judgment that they got against you in court? Or are they just claiming you owe the debt? I am guessing by the fact that you said you have been paying on it that you admit to owing the debt. Either way, we would need a little more info so that we can help you. For example, if they have a judgment against you, then they are legally allowed to add interest, but without knowing the exact details, I can only say that this increase in the amount seems to be excessive.
