Welcome!
In order to help you, we need more information:
First, were you served with a court summons? If you were, then you absolutely need to go to court on the date scheduled, or else the creditor will win by default.
Second, was this medical bill to a hospital, doctor, etc? The reason this is important is because most hospitals have programs for low-income patients and possibly you would meet the guidelines for them. This would help you pay this bill.
Third, how late is this bill and how much money have you paid on it?
Lastly, I'm afraid that if you've paid $50, you could easily still be garnished--but what you need to do is contact the hospital or MD's office, ask for guidelines on their financial assistance programs if they have them and if not, negotiate a good-faith payment plan schedule.
I have worked in this field for quite some time and can tell you that most hospitals and MD's will work with you if they can see a good-faith effort. Good luck and keep us posted.
The garnishment will be, I believe, 25 percent of your wages.
