How to Proceed?

I have not received a summons as of yet (found out from a lawyer sending me a letter wanting to represent me) but will be calling the court to find out my court date and how much I am being sued for.
The problem is that at the moment I am a student who works part-time and can not afford to pay anything remotely close to the sum requested.
So from reading on the forums, I have gathered that the best course of action is to show up to court and request a validation of the debt. Then go from there.
Should I try to settle for some kind of an amount, a payment plan? If a judgement is obtained what can they do if I don't have a job for example? I don't owe any property only thing I have is a very old used car. z
Thanks for the help.

You are right about that bit. Do appear in court and ask for validation during discovery. If you do not want the thing to go as far as the court house (provided that they have not filed the suit against you as of now), you can call Midland and see if you guys can possibly come up with a payment plan.
As for the implications of being sued, if you do not have a job, they cannot garnish your wages. The most they can do is place a lien on your car and levy your bank account.

What was exactly in this letter that you received from a lawyer looking to represent you? How did he find out that you were about to be sued? All of it will not be a matter of public record till the actual case is filed. Sounds a little odd.
