Unpaid debt, such as credit card bills, really never go away. There is a statute of limitations (SOL) that, once expired, prevents you from being legitimately sued in order to collect (you have to raise this defense if you are sued after the time expires). You technically can be place in collections any time you are late. However most accounts do not go to collections until they are at least 6 months past due.
