How long does a debt need to be before it can not be collected on?

Unpaid debt, such as credit card bills, really never go away. There is a statute of limitations (SOL) that, once expired, prevents you from being legitimately sued in order to collect (you have to raise this defense if you are sued after the time expires). The SOL is set by your state. Find out what it is in your state.
