My story of how we got into this mess

When my husband and I was first married we thought we had it all. A house was given to us by my husbands dad. The house was free and clear and all we had was the usual monthly bills. Then on may 28, 1994 our first daughter was born and only given 20 minute sto live and the doctors flew her to Peoria because they had an excellent neonatal unit there. Well the next day we headed to Peoria and while we were in Peoria not knowing if our daughter was going to make it, my mother in law :twisted: decided that she wanted the house back after hubby's dad pasted away and she through our stuff out in the yard and moved hubby's sister into it. 10 days later we came home to all our stuff ruined from the weather, no place to put a new baby. We moved in with my grandparents and started applying for a home loan and we got one for a 2 bedroom trailer. Great we thought our first home. Things were going great until all the doctor bills started coming in and they totaled over $15000.00 and they wanted the money now. So we decided to get a second mortgage which was our first mistake. My hubby got laid off from his job and there we were with 2 mortgages a new baby and bills up the wazoo. My grandparents started making our house payments til he could find something else and when he did we thought boy god is looking over us. Then when Kayla was 3 years old she started having seizures up to 10 times a day and more doctor bills started piling up. Once again all or nothing to the doctors. So, we started applying for loans and credit cards, second mistake. We had 5 credit cards and got the bills paid and the credit card payments overwhelmed us and we ended up filing for bankruptcy in July 2000. Free and clear of debt and the world was ours til hubby was transferred to Mississippi and we once again got into the credit card mess and bills piling up. Then in 2001 the twins were born and once again more doctor bills and we got more loans and had to have a bigger vehicle so we got a van and the payment was more than the house payment and we were sinking fast. And low and behold the Allsteel plant shut down in Verona and he was transferred to Milan, TN Allsteel plant and we thought ok things are starting to look up again and we got all caught up on the bills and everything and 11 months later they started laying people off because they were moving all operations back to Iowa. So, here we are again, little money falling behind on bills and borrowed from his retirement to live third mistake. Finally in 2002 he found a good stable management position in Jackson, TN and stability is the key word here. I worked at Altima making military boots til they had me doing a job that was more than I could handle and ended up with a back injury & ruptured/bulding discs and unable to work. I was denied disability do to not having enough work credit hours. Things were going okay for us then whamo more doctor bills and we started using the credit cards again and maxed them out and stayed pretty up pretty good on the payments til July 2005 when some a**holes stole $2200.00 out of our checking account and it went downhill fast from there. When we found out what had happened we closed our checking account and had to file a police report and all that good stuff and the bank wouldn't refund the money because they felt we were careless with our account number. Once the payday loan places found out the account was closed all hell broke loose and the threats, harassing phone calls and letters and emails were enormous. Then the credit card companies started calling wanting payment and as we all know you can't get blood out of a turnip. We tried to make payments and pay a little each month toward the payday loans but that wasn't good enough. By the time we paid the bills and payments to the loan sharks we had $50.00 for two weeks for gas and groceries. We learned real quick that something had to be done and I started searching for help and came across this site and now we are now consolidating all our credit cards and payday loans and have learned a very valuable lesson. If it wasn't for this site and the community helping with loads of information and letting me know I have rights and I don't have to put up with all the crap, lord only knows where we would be now. Sorry so boring, but i thought I would let people know a little bit about myself.

It's always nice to learn something about everyone on the forum. It sounds like you and your family have been through some very difficult times in your lives. I agree that this forum has been a great help, to both of us. You have been a big help to me since I joined the forum. I'm glad that things are turning around for you now.

Brat,

Life is like a large canvas and it has different shades on it. You have passed through tough times. You had to file bankruptcy in past and that is very much strenuous mentally. You were dealing with all these; however the situation became worst with payday loans. I can realize how bad you felt with all these. But see, the wheel has started to rotate again and you are moving on to the track.

This is what we call life. The best part of all these is that we have come together and found this place with lots of good people. I am sure you will be able to become debt free very soon. Best of luck :D

Thank you for shaing your story with us. Ever since October of 2005, I have been following your post history with great concern, which is of course how I came to join!

My heart has always gone out to you in your most desperate hours. I also know that you are a good, hardworking person, and you and your husband will soon be free.

No offense, but I find it very cruel of your mother in law to just toss you and your new family out on the street like that.

I remember a post where you said your husband is working on his Bachelor's degree. How are his studies coming along? I'm doing the very same thing myself, I'll have my BBA this summer. Are you thinking of taking some college courses? I'm taking mine online which is wonderful! You could benefit from it too! You can study at home and still be available to your family!

Tammy,isnt it great to see a little light at the end of the tunned,I also found this board when I was down to feeding my kids peanut butter and jelly as a daily meal.Im now in a consolidation program and will be debt free in a few years maybe sooner,it feels great.Money is still tight,but there is a little more left every payday,and that heavy weight that was on my shoulders is now a little lighter.Good luck to you,Im glad you found this place.

Yes Ari I have thought about going back to school next year when the twins are in school full time. My hubby is doing great in school.

twokidtwocat, yes it is great to see a little light at the end of the tunnel. I'm not scared to answer the phone, or get the mail. I am in the process of cleaning up our credit and things we have paid off, proving it is paid off and getting our credit score raised. Money is still a little tight, but at least now we can put food on the table and clothes on our back.

Good thing the seizures are over! I grew up with a stutter myself, is that what impedes her speech.

I just had a thought, I was just reminiscing about my old job up north at Home Depot, and my boss who was the only one with the cojones to get sarcastic with the store manager.

You made a comment about not getting blood from a turnip, and I was just thinking, if some clown called me for money that was not there given your circumstances, I would have quoted my boss and said "I have a sick child! What do you want me to do? Sh!t out money??"

My boss had made a similar comment regarding the understaffed lumber department when the store manager was pissing and moaning about things not getting done.

I have told them that about having a sick child and their response was so what. You owe the money get it however you have to. I have been told to go stand on a street corner to earn the money. Guess which scum lord said that. You guessed right, a representaive of OSI! I told him that wasn't necessary that my husband kept me very satisfied. The dude slammed down the phone and never heard from them again.

When I think of different incidents that happened over the years in my working life I can't believed tha they were allowed to happen. No one even knew what sexual harrassment was and would have thought you were nuts to risk your job and report people. Thank goodness laws governing the workplace are better now.
