I have a wage garnishment from Midland. They were garnishing my wages (despite not being served correctly and me disputing that, but that's for another post) from my last employer last summer. I got laid off from there and finally found a new job this month. The original debt was $1500; total balance $3100; amount garnished so far $500. As a single mom I can't afford them to garnish 25% of my wages. I was able to track down the atty office handling the account. I want to offer them a settlement of about $800, using my tax return, to be done with this. Is that a reasonable offer? Also how would I word the offer letter to ensure that when/if they accept they account is them marked closed/with a zero balance/paid as agreed

first of all, do not pay anything unless you receive a letter from them stating that they are accepting the payment as payment in full for the balance you owe -- they should accept the 800 half would be 750--of the original debt -- not sure what was paid so far -- but usually they will accept up to 20 percent -- remember -- the key is getting something in writing from them first before you release the payment to them
