Today a guy (with heavy Indian accent) who said he is from the Dept of Legal Affairs, called looking for my attorney info. I said for what? He said the Sheriffs office didnt contact you last week? I said no, he said oh you need to call Mike Carter at 415-952-5630 and he can explain. I said why cant you, he said cause I dont have your file, he does. Im just calling for your attorney's info. I look at the caller ID and its the SAME NUMBER he's calling from. So I call it back. Mike (also with heavy Indian Accent) said he would explain everything, he would just appreciate it if I didnt interupt him until he was done explaining the situation, so I didnt. He said I was bring brought up on 3 counts, one was check fraud, another is deception, I really wasnt paying attention to the 3rd one, but I will be arrested this week. Then he said, I'm done. So I replied with my defense of closed account, sent emails to the payday company letting them know what I was doing and that PayDay Loans illegal where I live in the state of NY. As I was doing this, he kept interupting me, I said to him I did not interupt you, I appreciate you didnt interupt me, he then stated that letters will be going out to my job and home tomorrow and I will be arrested as well and then hung up.
SOO... What do I do? Call an attorney? Call FTC? Call Attorney General? Ignore?
One thing I noticed is they never said the "This is an attempt to collect a debt.." speech. Ive been a debt collector before so I know no matter what the call is about they have to say that every time, like miranda rights... But that and the Indian Accents have me thinking scam... Thoughts and imput greatly aprpeciated...
Good for you! "John" and "Dan
Good for you! "John" and "Dan" are probably calling you from a telephone boiler room somewhere in India. Any information the FBI can use to take their bosses down would be appreciated.
Total scam. New York is one
Total scam. New York is one of the states where payday lending is illegal. They are feeding you a bunch of BS. Simply ignore. If the calls persist, report them to your state AG and the FTC. They cannot do anything to you.
I need to add this is for a
I need to add this is for a collection for Cash Advance USA... that is a loan company I never took a loan out with.. that I am aware of.
Received these calls too
I have received these same calls from the Law Office of Steve Adonis.....lol
I filed complaints with the SAG, FTC, and (since receiving an email from them) the FBI I3C (Internet Crimes Division).
It is always a man with a more than heavy Indian accent with names like "John Smith" or "Dan Miller". I told them to never call me at work again and hung up. They called right back and asked why I hung up and I said "because I don't want or have to talk to you and this is a scam to extort money AND if you had any sense you would Google yourselves to find that out". They called me a further 4 times.....then I received a similar email message from another place using the same payday loan company quoted here. I emailed them back, using colorful language and telling them to learn proper English grammar and then reported them to I3C......
