I recently read that Payday lenders are illegal in certain states. Due to unfortunate circumstances, I have payday loans to the following lenders:Advance me today,VIP,Ameriloan,American Web Loan,Integrity,Cashjar,500 Fast CashI live in the state of Connecticut and I wrote an email to Advance me today stating it is illegal for pay lenders to lend in CT and they came back with this responsePlease be aware that this is a St. Vincent company, St Vincent and the United States are both parties to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (G.A.T.T.), a treaty which specifically permits companies in one country to make consumer loans to citizens of the other. Under the treaty, we are only obligated to follow the federal laws of the United States. We are not required to obtain state licenses and individual state laws do not apply since the federal laws adopting this treaty supersede any state's laws on the subject. If there is anything else we may do for you do not hesitate to contact us again. Please adviseThanks

Payday lending is prohibited in Connecticut. All of the above mentioned pdl companies are illegal in your state. You owe them nothing more than the principal. No interest, no fees. Just close down your old bank account and open a new one. Don’t worry, they won’t be able to do anything.

Dear Advance Me Today

Cut the G.A.T.T crap!! You know as well as I do that the agreement I signed is not legally enforceable. I do not live in St Vincent and as such I am not subject to your laws. The only laws that apply to me are the laws of MY state of Conneticut and you know it. Legally I owe you NOTHING. Morally I will repay the principal balance at my convienence via postal money orders. These are MY terms and should you choose not to cooperate, you will get nothing. (Include the last part only if you owe principal)

Govern yourself accordingly

the federal treaty they bring up is just another run around tactic.as stated above any lender must abide by your state laws.so respond like this:

i am not a resident of st.vincent(thank god)so unless you plan on extraditing me to st.vincent i am not swayed by your email whatsoever.

respond like that.

I have had luck with 2 of my lenders after involving my state's atty general office. Simple reference to the consumer fraud rep I was working with put an end to it. I live in NY. However, with Advance Me Today I have attempted to make arrangements to pay the rest of the principal ($100) after consider a two $75 "fee" payments as payments towards the original principal of $250. They failed to respond after 3 or 4 emails and then finally did with some federal law being the "supreme law of the land" and the GATT statement. I responded by stating that if that were true then why does their website state they only make loans in states where it is permitted by law? I again offered to pay the balance of the principal. I might be stupid getting in to the payday loan cycle but I'm not deadbeat. I WANT to pay what is fair and legal. Today, my account says "charged off". Any thoughts on whether they'll come after me or start to make a nuisance towards my references or employer? I am a bit nervous but I'm hoping since I questioned their website statement of only making loans where permitted put an end to it. Thoughts??

they most likely sold the debt to a bottomfeeder that will call alot.you can keep us apprised if anything does happen in that regard and we can advise further, but illegal pdl smegma never just go away,or the bottomfeeders that call on them.

Their website does clearly state that they make loans to residents in states where permitted so.... you might have called their bluff. They do show an email for collections so it might be that they will attempt to contact you themselves instead of some scum collector. I'd just hang tight and see what happens.
