In December of 2000 my ex and I split up. I moved from the appartment that we lived in and she stayed. I signed the necessary documents to remove my name from the lease. She refused to sign the lease papers but stayed in the appartment for two months. They then evicted her for non payment. It is on my credit report now that I owe them over $700 for the two months that I didn't live there. I disputed this item on my credit report. About two days later I received an email saying the debt was valid.

How can I fight this?
Thanks, Ryan

Hi Ryan--good to see you here!
Have you spoken to the manager of the apartments? If disputing it with the credit bureaus didn't pan out, my next move would be to speak to the manager of the apartments. Explain just what you told us here and how you thought it was taken care of, a done deal, until you looked over your credit report. Could be that someone misplaced the paper that you signed to remove your name from the lease and still have the paper with both of your names on it. JMO-shirley

You can also talk with the state wise legal services or the tenants association for this purpose. Only a written lease signed by you will prove your part of the story.

Did the credit bureau mention that the debt is valid? If you are still not convinced about it, you can request an explanation from the bureau. They will give you a detailed description of this item.
