Hello,
I used to have an account with AT&T Cellular years ago. I did not renew my contract and went with another provider. After a few months I received a collection letter for a balance of over $500.00. I called and they said it was my last months bill plus a fee for withdrawing from my contract early. I faxed copies of my payment and the date it was made. I heard nothing from them again. I now have a charge off on my credit report from Pallisades for that amount. I have spoken to them and faxed them copies of all my paperwork. They say that AT&T gave them the debt and that it is valid. I went back and forth for a few months and gave up. It still shows on my credit report and they refuse to take it off tho they cannot prove that I owe it. They say they dont have to prove it because it was given to them from AT&T. What is wrong with these people? I am in the process of fixing several errors on my credit report and will be disputing this as well. Should I attempt to dispute with this company yet again or go through the credit reporting agencies?

This exact same thing happened to me. I had an account with AT&T for 6 years, renewed my contract once, then never renewed again. My contract had been expired for 3 yrs, then when I went to cancel and get new service, they came up with this bogus line that i had called the month before and signed a new contract. We went back and forth forever, and the account ended up with Palisades, who are a bunch of morons. And they ended up billing me over $400 for monthly service fees, even though I had cancelled my service, and $175 early termination fee even though I had no new contract with them. I think everyone should get together and make a class action law suit against AT&T for this.

How many years ago? Also your case is a bit different from the other guest. I haven't dealt with AT&T personally. But you have to go through the contract first. If it asks for any fees for early termination of the service, chances are they will go for it.

If the item is close to 7 year reporting time, wait for the automatic removal. Otherwise dispute it with credit bureaus. One more thing, have you asked for validation from the collection agency?

There's a debt purchaser in Arizona named Cavalry Portfolio who mainly buys old "debts" from AT&T and Sprint cell phones. In most cases I have seen, they are completely fraudulent. I have heard from people who have never even had an AT&T or Sprint cell phone but got dunned by Cavalry.

Although creditors should have more respect for their "customers" ( if the ever were customers of thiers) I think the govt who issues SSN #s and holds private info should be held accountable for giving out sensitive information.
Its not fair that these jerks should have access to your info. Think about it, if theyre willing to lie like they do, what else can they do with your SSN and address? That ifo is in their system for all to see and shouldnt be... unless you owe money ( wich seems to be all to common that noone does!)
